Arizona Summer Flowers...

Those of us that live in the low desert know how hard it is to find beautiful flowers that will grow through out the summer. I have found a few that will last (as long as I sing to them) through the summer.

Portulaca, is probably the hardiest in the low desert and will spread like ground cover. They love the sun.

Celosia is also very hardy and loves the sun. They come in multiple colors. However, I love the type called China Town or New Look because of their leaves. They start out red and green and turn a dark purple by mid summer.

Periwinkle or Vinca is the favorite summer flower in the low desert. I have better luck with them in part sun. They come in many shades of pink, purple and white.

This year I planted the Celosia 'New Look' with Vinca's and love how the white looks with the red.

Make sure you keep the soil wet after you plant them for about a week. Feed them every couple of weeks and don't forget to sing to them. ;-)
